Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs)

The council were hoping to apply for a solar PV installation and needed an EPC.

EPC’s are a legal requirement under the Energy Performance of Buildings Regulations (EPBR), for any building constructed, sold or let after 2008 in the UK.

The EPC provides an energy rating from A-G and is based on the energy performance potential of the building (fabrics) and its services (heating, ventilation, lighting). Along with the installation of solar PV, the council also wanted to apply for a Feed in Tariff (FiT) application. An EPC is a necessary part of this process. Our consultant carried out the task, however the energy performance was rated as an E. To qualify for the FiT for their new solar PV, this needed to be improved to a minimum of a D rating.

Efficient at improving efficiency

Knowing the predicament the council were in, we carried out simulation modelling to establish the impact different efficiency changes would have on the efficiency rating.

A bright idea

We liaised with the council to discuss the issues and made proactive suggestions on how to rectify this. One of the most favourable options based on our calculations was to improve the lighting. The council agreed to the initiative and the installation was arranged.

Successful solution

After installation we completed the final EPC. The depot rating was now classed as a D which allowed the council to continue with their application. The council benefitted from an up to date EPC, improved lighting and were also able to continue with their FiT application without delay.
